YOUNG TALENT – Apprentices return to school to inspire students

Spencer Group apprentices returned to their former school to inspire students to follow in their footsteps.

Four of our trainees joined staff at a recent Apprenticeships Expo held at Ron Dearing University Technical College (UTC) to speak to other aspiring young engineers.

The event was held to give students the chance to meet with employers and find out more about apprenticeships and other career opportunities.

Our apprentices, part of a cohort of 14 taken on from Ron Dearing UTC last September, spoke to Year 11, 12 and 13 students about their experiences so far and how Spencer Group has provided them with the platform for a successful career.

They were joined by Engineer Thomas Inglis, who was impressed with the potential he saw in the sixth form students who will soon be leaving Hull’s pioneering digital technology and engineering school.

He said:

“We brought our own apprentices so the students could relate to them.

“We have an idea of how many apprentices we want to take on this year, but if we find extraordinarily high talent in the group leaving the school, we will take more on.

“Last year we didn’t intend on taking on 14 but the students were of such a high standard that we decided we would. The students at Ron Dearing UTC are very talented and enthusiastic.”

Spencer Group is one of the Founding Partner employers of Ron Dearing UTC, which opened in September 2017 in our home city of Hull, offering a unique education model for students aged 14-19.

Specialist subjects studied at the school include digital technologies, computing, digital media and engineering in a range of disciplines including design, manufacture, electrical and mechanical, systems control and automation.

The Apprenticeships Expo was organised by Ron Dearing UTC partner employer, recruitment specialist Emmerson Kitney, and more than a dozen businesses attended.
