Spencer Rail launches health and safety initiative on New Cross Gate Depot project

Spencer Rail workers are being rewarded for working safely on the New Cross Gate Depot project.

A new health and safety initiative has been introduced by Spencer to ensure safety levels on the project remain at a high level.

Operations director Tim Evans, with the support of SHEQ, has implemented a ‘Site Safety Gold Star Award’, which is issued to a member of the project workforce on a weekly basis.

Tim said: “The award is designed to give recognition to one member of the workforce who has displayed excellent health and safety standards, attitude and behaviour through the week.

“Spencer and Transport for London (TfL) management jointly selects the member of the workforce they feel meet the grade and in turn, a certificate and small prize is issued at the end of the week.

“So far this scheme has had a very positive effect on project health and safety, workforce motivation and safe behaviours on site.”

Spencer Rail is holding an event this week at New Cross Gate to officially launch the new scheme.

Using her experience of working with disabled people outside of work, mechanical and electrical project manager Jennifer Armstrong has put together the programme for the sight impairment initiative.

It includes a specific eye injuries tool box talk by Iain Kirk, a site walk to select individual groups for a spot TBS on safety eyewear and simulation of impairments with the specially adapted eye glasses, and an evening at a restaurant with TfL and depot staff to simulate eating a meal as if they were blind.

Recent winners of the award are:

  • Rob Talbot, of Sword Construction, who has shown continued enthusiasm with regard to his approach to health and safety while operating plant in a challenging environment and diligently managing fellow colleagues on site
  • Sorin Ene, of Podtrak, received the award for playing his part in ensuring construction plant was safely banked along Juno Way and was not disrupting local residents. He has also been instrumental on site in ensuring exclusion zones have been maintained as well as ensuring the safety of personnel working in areas with limited space

A formal presentation was carried out by TfL director Mike Stubbs and Spencer Rail CEO David McLoughlin in recognition of the scheme and to congratulate the winners so far.
