Privately owned engineering company, Spencer Group, has chosen Macmillan Cancer Support as their next charity of the year. Spencer asked their 360+ strong staff to vote for the charity they would like to support over the coming year, which resulted in a unanimous decision for Macmillan.
Spencer will begin their fundraising for Macmillan immediately, and will hold launch events with Macmillan, at their head office in Hull and regional offices in London and Glasgow.
Currently, over 2.5 million people are affected by cancer in the UK and by 2030, this figure will rise to 4 million people. Macmillan believe that no one should face cancer alone, so they provide practical support at home through pain relief, expert advice or palliative care.
It is not only patients who live with cancer, Macmillan also help carers, families and communities through funding nurses, other specialist health care professionals and building cancer care centres.
Stakeholder Manager for Spencer Group, Julie Worman, said: ”Macmillan Cancer Support are such a wonderful charity who help millions across the world each year. We gave our staff a list of five great charities that covered a broad range of causes but we had a very clear winner in Macmillan.
“Our main aim is to raise awareness of specific cancers amongst our workforce and how to check for them. Raising awareness is a huge part in the fight against cancer and with the help of Macmillan, we hope we can really make a difference.”
Throughout the year, Spencer raise money in numerous ways from their dress-down Fridays to bake sales to sponsored athletic events. Action for Children, who work tirelessly to make life better for vulnerable children, were Spencer’s previous charity of the year. They managed to raise an impressive £6,324.06 for this worthwhile cause.
Becky Baynes, Macmillan’s Fundraising Manager for Hull and East Yorkshire, said: “We are excited that Spencer Group are launching their charity of the year partnership with Macmillan and look forward to working with everyone over the next year. It is wonderful to be so well supported by all of the staff at Spencer and we thank you for choosing to help people affected by cancer.
“Macmillan Cancer Support is 99% funded by donations alone and we could not carry out our work without the thoughtfulness and generosity of people like you. Together, we will make a huge difference to patients and their families facing their most difficult times. Our aim is to make sure no-one faces cancer alone and to inspire many others to do the same – thank you for helping to make that possible!”
