Solidworks Technician

Description of Role

As a Solidworks Technician, you must be able to think outside of the box and come up with simple, effective solutions to complex problems. You will take a leading role in building well-structured Solidworks models and high-quality engineering drawings.

You will operate within a collaborative design office environment, providing innovative and practical solutions to technical challenges using the latest 3D design software. Your role will involve working collaboratively with engineers to produce 3D models, fabrication drawings, and general arrangement drawings for both tender and contractual submissions.

Your role will also involve coordinating with design and build teams, ensuring that all outputs meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency in a fast-paced environment where precision matters.

The Mechanical Design team at Spencer Group is a small, dedicated group of engineers and technicians who self-deliver a variety of structural and mechanical design works across multiple sectors, including bridges, materials handling, energy, and nuclear.

Responsibilities 

  • Work accurately and take technical ownership of outputs, ensuring maximum efficiency and productivity in accordance with the design brief
  • Produce high-quality, well-structured Solidworks models
  • Produce high-quality fabrication and general arrangement drawings
  • Attend and contribute to site visits, design reviews, and progress meetings
  • Ensure all documentation is correctly produced in accordance with Spencer Group and client procedures and securely filed
  • Identify any design issues and changes as soon as they become apparent
  • Work within the company’s IS09001 quality systems
  • Manage safety by design, ensuring compliance with all legal and company procedures and work with a positive and proactive attitude to safety
  • Work to strict document control and checking processes
  • Communicate effectively with required equipment suppliers to support design development and project delivery
  • Promote a collaborative and supportive team culture, contributing to the ongoing development, capability, and success of the Mechanical Design function

Requirements and Qualifications

Person Specification 

  • A proactive and technically capable technician with good problem-solving skills and a commitment to delivering high-quality design outputs
  • Capable of working independently on technical outputs while contributing effectively within a close-knit team environment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise confidently with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels
  • Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to review their own outputs to ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance with the design brief
  • Able to work effectively under pressure, managing multiple priorities and meeting tight project deadlines

Qualifications & Experience 

  • HNC in Mechanical or Structural Engineering (or related discipline) is preferred, although not essential, with a minimum of 3 years’ experience
  • Proven experience in structural and mechanical detailing
  • Experience in SolidWorks for 3D design development and drawing production is essential
  • Experienced in the use of AutoCAD for 3D and 2D design development, although not essential
  • Experienced in the use of pointcloud data and clash detection using Navisworks is desired although not essential
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel
