Spencer Group enhances in-house capabilities with surfacing solution accreditation

Spencer Group has further enhanced its in-house capabilities by being awarded accreditation to apply an advanced surfacing solution which can be utilised in bridge and rail projects.

The bridge engineering specialist has been accredited to apply the BRIDGEMASTER® advanced bridge deck waterproofing solution, which protects a range of surfaces from the elements.

Developed by GCP, BRIDGEMASTER® is a 3 in 1 solution which creates a waterproof and skid resistant surface and can be used on a variety of structures such as road bridges, walkways, steps, ramps and much more.

BRIDGEMASTER® provides a range of benefits including protecting structures from water and harsh weather, ensuring a long-lasting finish. Due to the technical nature of the application process, BRIDGEMASTER® can only be applied by accredited contractors, meaning the work has previously been outsourced.

Being awarded the accreditation enables Spencer Group to bring even more services in-house, allowing the team greater oversight of the quality of even more elements of each project, and increasing co-ordination between those working on site.

Spencer Group Quality Manager, Nick Simpson, said:

“We found that more clients were asking for BRIDGEMASTER® to be used in their contract requirements and wanted to bring this service in-house to increase our offering.

“We recently welcomed GCP’s Technical Site Support Manager, Dean Holding, to our Erskine Bridge project to undertake application training and we’re pleased to have been awarded accreditation thanks to our team’s high-quality workmanship.

“The installation of this waterproofing and surfacing solution makes structures less vulnerable to the elements and attack from water, chloride and frost, improving the durability of the structure, which is relevant for many of our bridge and rail projects.”

The first project where the team will be utilising the new accreditation is on the Erskine Bridge, which spans the River Clyde near Glasgow.

Spencer Group has carried out a series of projects on the crossing, dating back almost 20 years, for Amey, a service provider in the Scottish roads maintenance sector, on behalf of Transport Scotland, and the team is currently refurbishing the footway panels on the historic bridge.

BRIDGEMASTER® will be applied to 2.65km of footway panels on both the west and east sides of the bridge structure, which will be the largest BRIDGEMASTER® project to be carried out in the UK.
