A charitable team of Spencer Group employees laced up their hiking boots over the weekend to take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks in aid of The Lighthouse Construction Charity.
Each year, Hull-based engineering firm Spencer Group selects an organisation to be their official charity partner.
This year, the company chose The Lighthouse Construction Charity, the only organisation in the UK dedicated to supporting the emotional, physical, and financial wellbeing of construction workers and their families.
The company’s ‘Charity Champions’ have organised a range of fundraising events throughout the year, from an Easter raffle and Football Shirt Friday to bake sales and the Hull 10k. Their latest challenge, however, marks one of their biggest events yet, tackling the Yorkshire Three Peaks.
A team of twenty dedicated Spencer Group employees signed up for the challenge, putting in the training each week with smaller walks to prepare for the demanding 24-mile hike.
Last weekend, the day finally arrived for the team to take on the challenge, heading straight from work to Horton-in-Ribblesdale, the starting point of the trek, where the team set up camp for the night, ready for a 6am start.
Eager to get started, the team set off to tackle the first peak, Pen-y-Ghent, the smallest but steepest of the three. They completed this starting climb in just one hour; however, an eight-mile walk stood between them and the second peak, which they reached at around 10:30am.
Lee Daniels, Assurance Manager at Spencer Group, acted as a support vehicle for the team at every checkpoint, waiting for them with food, water, and a smile, putting them in good spirits for the next part of their journey.
As the trek went on, occasional heavy showers left parts of the route muddy and slippery, causing the occasional slip and fall. Still, the team’s spirits remained high as they tackled some daunting paths and climbs, at times with almost no visibility.
In just 11 hours, faster than their target time, the team completed the hike, spurred on by plenty of laughs and constant encouragement from one another. Their spirits were lifted even higher knowing they had already smashed their £2,000 fundraising goal before the walk began.
Claire Ransom, Completions Manager and Charity Champion at Spencer Group said:
“I’m so proud to be part of this team and everything we achieved on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks fundraising challenge.
“It was definitely not for the faint-hearted, the route was tough, and the weather made it even more challenging, but we got through it together. We lifted each other’s spirits, kept smiling, and pushed on as a team.
“I’m delighted that we beat our donation target, and I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone for the time, effort, and energy you put in to make this such a success.”
Fellow Charity Champion, Emily Marshall added:
“I really enjoyed completing the Yorkshire 3 peaks Challenge, it was tough but incredibly rewarding!
“There was such a great group of us and everyone encouraged each other and helped keep spirits high throughout the day.”
Spencer Group has already raised £7,926 of their £10,000 target for The Lighthouse Charity. Thanks to the team’s dedication and hard work, they are well on their way, any donation, big or small, will help them reach their goal and support the important work the charity does.
