Leading Hull-based business Spencer Group is supporting a new, high-profile event providing a powerful climax to Humber Business Week.
Spencer Group is among the main sponsors for The Business Day, which aims to place business networking at the heart of a day of discovery and insight for hundreds of business leaders from across the Humber region and beyond.
The event, held at Bridlington Spa on Friday, June 9, will include keynote speeches from leading businesswoman Baroness Brady of Knightsbridge CBE and acclaimed reporter and broadcaster John Simpson CBE. Television presenter Alexander Armstrong will be the host throughout the day.
Spencer Group has come together with the organisers and other sponsors to make the event possible as part of the company’s commitment to the region and its business community.
As a further contribution to what is intended to be an annual event, Spencer Group is hosting two breakout sessions focused on key developments within the region – Hull’s new employer-led Ron Dearing University Technical College (UTC) and the Energy Works power plant currently under construction in the city.
Spencer Group is one of the leading local employers who are driving forward the UTC, which is due to open in September this year and aims provide a new pipeline of young talent to realise the city’s economic potential.
Spencer Group Executive Chairman Charlie Spencer OBE is the UTC’s Chair of Trustees and, together with Principal Sarah Pashley and representatives of three of the new school’s other employer sponsors, KCOM, RB and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, they will explain how the UTC will tackle key skills gaps.
The session will be an opportunity for local business leaders to learn how the UTC is working with employers to identify the skills they require and how it plans to develop the workforce stars of the future.
Delegates can also take the opportunity to gain an insight into Energy Works, the Humber region’s largest current development,
Taking shape on the east bank of the River Hull, Energy works is a £200m investment in one of the UK’s most innovative green energy facilities. Spencer Group has taken Energy Works from concept through to development and is now playing a key part in this huge construction project.
The Energy Works breakout session will enable delegates to learn about the seven-year journey of a pioneering project to power Hull’s green energy future and the success of an entrepreneurial, private sector-led approach to major infrastructure investment.
Charlie Spencer said: “We’re delighted to support this major new event which will bring together hundreds of business leaders for a valuable day of networking, insight and inspiration.
“Although we deliver projects across the UK and overseas, our business was founded in Hull and is run from the city. We’re deeply committed to playing our full part in the business life of the region.
“Because of that we were keen to sponsor this exciting and innovative event and also contribute to an engaging agenda for the day. The sessions we’re staging on Ron Dearing UTC and Energy Works will give delegates an informative and useful perspective on key initiatives delivering new skills and energy infrastructure to drive forward the region’s economy.”
Delegates are advised to pre-book to attend the breakout sessions as places are limited. The Ron Dearing UTC and Energy Works sessions are at 10.10am and 1pm respectively and delegates can book to attend at www.TheBusinessDay.com
Around 650 delegates are due to attend The Business Day. As well as Spencer Group, the event’s main sponsors are East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Hull City Council, University of Hull, KCOM, Welcome to Yorkshire, the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership, Sewell Group and For Entrepreneurs Only.
Cllr Stephen Parnaby OBE, Leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Working jointly with The Business Day’s main sponsors has allowed us to confidently build around the concept of business networking but include a top-tier line-up of speakers too.
“Delegates will definitely experience an event that’s a bit different and sponsors will feel the benefit of having the time and space to communicate with their customers and prospects.”
