Spencer Group makes it a Best Place to Work double in national industry awards

Spencer Group has reaffirmed its status as one of the construction industry’s leading employers after being named as the Best Place to Work – Large Firm in the prestigious Construction News (CN) Workforce Awards.

The multi-disciplinary construction and engineering specialist was recognised for its commitment to fostering an environment where employees feel listened to, mental health is prioritised and colleagues are supported to progress.

Colleagues from the business were presented with the accolade during a glittering gala evening at the luxurious JW Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel in London. It brings Spencer Group’s awards count to seven so far this year.

Spencer Group is passionate about providing opportunities for young people and has an extensive apprenticeship and training programme. Spencer Group apprentices from various intakes are pictured outside the business’s head office in Hull.

In an era where the UK construction industry is facing significant challenges, the CN Workforce Awards aim to recognise and celebrate the dedication and innovation of the sector’s workforce and provide a prestigious platform to showcase business achievements and commitment to excellence.

The accolade is the second time this year that Spencer Group has been recognised with a national industry award for its commitment to employee wellbeing, after also being named Best Place to Work – Contractor in the prestigious New Civil Engineer Awards in July.

Spencer Group impressed the CN Awards judges with its commitment to employee wellbeing, delivered through unique initiatives that go beyond traditional workplace offerings to promote greater employee care and work-life balance.

To help support employee wellbeing and mental health, the business has introduced Mental Health First Aiders, supports the Time to Talk Day pledge, and has family-friendly policies, such as enhanced maternity leave and “bring your dog to work” days, to enable colleagues to thrive, both personally and professionally.

Spencer Group also actively invests in the professional development and personal growth of its employees, through its Personal Development Review process, the Future Leaders programme, and the use of the PRINT® tool, an innovative combination of customised reports, insightful workshops and team/individual coaching that reveal the unconscious motivators behind employee behaviours and actions

As a founding partner of Hull’s employer led school, Ron Dearing UTC, Spencer Group is also passionate about enabling the next generation to flourish, and has extensive apprenticeship and training programmes to provide young people with the very best foundation from which to start their career.

Spencer Group’s entry for the award carried the slogan “Empowering People, Powering Progress”, encompassing the company’s commitment to helping colleagues to flourish and to developing young talent.

Spencer Group HR Director Yvonne Moir said: “Spencer Group is committed to being an outstanding employer and we wholeheartedly believe that our people are key to our success.

“We invest in employee wellbeing and progression because we’re passionate about creating an environment where everyone can thrive.

“We’re delighted that our efforts have been recognised in the Construction News Workforce Awards, but, even more importantly, we’re encouraged by our regular staff survey results that show that our people feel listened to, cared for and inspired when they come to work.”

The awards judges said: “Spencer Group demonstrated a sophisticated and mature approach to employee wellbeing across mental, physical, and financial dimensions. The leadership team’s strong commitment and investment in people has created a genuine sense of family and belonging.

“We were particularly impressed by their active listening, tangible action, and innovative approaches. Their integrated Corporate Social Responsibility activities and continuous improvement culture reflect a truly forward-thinking and people-centred organisation.”
