Leeds Civil Engineering students visit Corporation Road Bridge

CIVIL Engineering students from the University of Leeds have visited Corporation Road Bridge in North East Lincolnshire to gain a first-hand insight into work on a Grade II listed structure.

Four students, who are studying civil engineering, attended a tour of the 100-year-old bridge site last month to understand the scale of the work involved on the structure, and hear about the nature of the challenges faced on site.

The half-day visit was arranged between engineering firm Spencer Group, consulting engineers Roughan & O’Donovan, and the University of Leeds School of Civil Engineering, and was signed off by North East Lincolnshire Council.

Speaking ahead of the visit, Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for highways and transport, said:

“I’m pleased that we’ve been able to accommodate a visit on site for these students.

“It’s important that the next generation of engineers and construction workers get a chance to see how work is done first-hand, and get to speak to people who are doing those jobs.

“Corporation Road Bridge presents a rare opportunity for these aspiring engineers to see some of the challenges that a Grade II listed structure can present, so I’m really pleased that these students have been able to benefit from hearing about the experiences of the site workers, and hear how some of those issues have been overcome.”

The students were given presentations about our work on Corporation Bridge by Alistair Sceats, Site Engineer for Spencer Group and Peter Campbell, Senior Structural Engineer for Roughan & O’Donovan, followed by an engaging Q & A session.

After donning full PPE and receiving a site induction by the Spencer Group team, the students went out onto the bridge worksite to gain valuable first-hand knowledge of what working on such an iconic structure involves, including the difficulties faced when working in a confined space at height.

Alistair Sceats added:

“Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming students from the University of Leeds to our Corporation Bridge project. It was great to engage with the next generation of students from the University of Leeds. All of the students were fully engaged with the presentation and showed great interest in the site works – it was a pleasure hosting them for the day.”

North East Lincolnshire Council, its delivery partner Equans, and contractor Spencer Group, would like to thank the public for their patience whilst the work is being undertaken to restore the Grade II listed structure.
