Spencer Group’s in-house knowledge of integrating building works with works on the operational infrastructure enables us to offer a full design and build service for new stations. This gave Network Rail full confidence in awarding us a contract worth £5.4 million to design and construct a brand new station building and facilities at St. Helens.
Using our in-house programming methodology, works were carefully divided into two distinct phases. Phase one incorporated the construction of the new station and associated facilities, with phase two involving the transfer of existing equipment and demolition of the old station buildings and subways.
The new station building was created on the Wigan-bound platform, south of the present location. Using innovative construction materials and methods, our team created a façade of spider glazing supported by exposed structural steelwork, copper shingle fin walls and masonry. The building incorporates a new booking hall, waiting room, retail areas, toilets, ticket office, staff office areas, messing facilities and ancillary accommodation.
Integrated into the new building are stairs and a passenger lift leading to a new footbridge; this gives access to the Liverpool bound island platform. The footbridge is supported at the island platform end by a structure incorporating another passenger lift, stairs and a waiting room.
The project was completed whilst maintaining the normal running of the station at all times. We were proud to receive the North West Construction Excellence Award.
