North Fambridge Loop
Network Rail appointed Spencer Group as its chosen partner to extend the passing loop at North Fambridge Station. This major project, with a value of £1.2 million, was commissioned to enable 12-car operations in either direction on the single-line Southminster branch, increasing capacity and easing overcrowding towards Liverpool Street at peak times.
The track was extended at one end by approximately 40m with a new replacement S&C turnout. OLE adjustments followed the new track layout with five new structures and removal and adjustment to a number of the existing structures.
A 24m platform extension was also added at the same end, while two signals were also repositioned and replaced with new LED signals and their associated equipment. Two SPTs were relocated to the new signal posts along with a new PZT at position of the new switches. A new UTX was constructed to accommodate signalling and power routes. The team also installed new lighting to the platform extension and on upgrade to the points heating.
The project was delivered in a narrow rail corridor, with works in close proximity to the public.
All p-way, signalling and OLE works were delivered within a one-week period. The project was completed with zero possession overruns. Interfaces were excellent between the various disciplines.
