Creating key infrastructure for green energy
The rail unloading facility was designed to facilitate the unloading of six 1,100t capacity trains per day whilst they were moving. It was constructed with minimal disruption to the existing pet coke and coal delivery lines already supplying the power station. Combining our rail and process engineering experience, we diverted rail traffic whilst constructing a subterranean facility that fully unloads each train within 40 minutes. Two 7,500t storage silos were constructed to house the material, which could then be reclaimed using two large 40m screw reclaimers. Spencer designed and constructed the conveying system for the material, including a screening house which sampled and weighed the material and automatically removed tramp metal.
Delivering projects safely
Key to the successful outcome of this project was the scheduling and management of risks; through risk workshops, adoption of appropriate control measures and periodic risk review meetings. Quality of construction and health and safety standards were also maintained to a particularly high standard due to the pro-active approach of the team and were recognised by the client who presented us with the ‘Contractor Safety Excellence Silver Award’.
