Port of Tyne Substations

Spencer Group were responsible for the construction and installation of two substations at the Port of Tyne, South Shields, including all electrical designs, installation works and commissioning of the new substations. This specifically involved distribution network operator (DNO) supplies and connections, alongside 11kv distribution switchgear, ground enabling works and associated security measures including fencing. These complex works required considerable collaboration with stakeholders and between engineering disciplines to enable us to deliver a project involving a diverse set of skills.

Client Northern Power Grid
Location Port of Tyne, South Shield

Project Scope

This project required Spencer Group to deploy skills from a number of experts in their disciplines, including our civil, electrical and mechanical engineers, to ensure that all aspects of the project were delivered correctly and smoothly. The civil engineering element of the project included groundworks and construction of a base for the substation, as well as an access road for the site and security fencing for safety. This was combined with the construction of the switchgear, transformer and metering compartment and the installation, testing and commissioning of their equipment. These complex works were made possible by our multi-disciplinary approach, that enabled us to manage the skills of several diverse disciplines.

The project involved

Two new substations

Outcome

As a result of these works, we were able to connect the two new substations at the Port of Tyne to Northern Power Grid’s own DNO substations, fulfilling the client’s power needs. This was made possible by extensive and close collaboration between Spencer, Northern Power Grid and the Port of Tyne Authorities, to enable the works to be carried out to each stakeholders’ requirements. The civil engineering works were completed in conjunction with the complex mechanical and electrical works within the substation, made possible by Spencer Group’s multi-disciplinary capabilities.
